2002 Zinfandel
click image to close window This unique wine, the only Santa Rita Hills Zinfandel, is made from 29-year-old vines growing in our Lafond Vineyard. Because most of our seven acre Zinfnadel block was planted in sand, the stressful growing conditions allow for late season fruit riping in this unusally cold growing area for this particular grape.

Still, we are never guaranteed that the fruit will ripen every year and we are never immune from rot should there be too much mositure at the wrong time for our thin-skinned Zinfandel. When lucky enough to harvest tasty ripe fruit, Winemaker Bruce McGuire chooses only the best for our “Lafond Vineyard” label.

The long, cool growing year of 2002 again saw Bruce waiting till the end of the first week of November to finish the Zinfandel harvest. A very good fruit set in the Spring and a lack of early rain gave us very good yields in this block...something we had not seen since 1993.

Our “cool-climate” Zinfandel rewards us with superb flavor concentration marked by intense raspberry character forward in the mouth and black pepper spice on the finish. A versatile food wine, it is a welcome match with hearty fare such as grilled meats, spicy sausages, and good old American BBQ.
